Hornussen, like swiss wrestling and stone throwing, is one of the Swiss national sports and is played primarily in the canton of Bern. The process: A plastic disc (“Hornuss” or “Nouss” for short) is hit as far as possible while the opposing team tries to stop the flying Nouss with a flat interceptor blade (“shingle”) before it hits the playing field at the latest. Cricket or baseball in swiss german.

Fun Fact

  • The form of Hornussen played today probably comes from the Emmental and was mentioned as early as 1625.
  • Hornuss is the Swiss name for hornet. In flight, the insect sounds like the plastic disc that gets pitched by playing Hornussen.

Ingredients 01

Carrots

Mountains and chocolate: When it comes to Switzerland, the clichés are quickly mentioned. Carrots usually come in third place. And it is actually the Swiss people’s favorite vegetable. Around nine kilograms are eaten per person per year. What is not true, however, is that only the standard orange carrot ends up on the plate. The range of varieties is now colorful and ranges from white to yellow to violet.

Dish

The carrot cake belongs to Switzerland, no question about it. We have reinterpreted the classic. Let yourself be surprised!

Ingredients 02

Blackberry blossom

From May to July, the blackberry bushes with their white or delicate pink flowers are particularly beautiful to look at. Later the fruits develop their typical dark purple to black color. Blackberries (Brombeeri in Swiss German) are planted in gardens, but also grow wild in forests or on the edges of forests. Be careful when collecting: Blackberries are very prickly, which is why they are also called “dewberries”.

Dish

Finely handcrafted blackberry blossoms from sugar paste highlight the motto of the blackberry dessert.
